The Lord of the Rings movies changed a strange friendship from the books, but it ultimately helped Eowyn and Theoden's touching relationship arc.
The Lord of the Rings books saw two characters form an unlikely friendship, but this was cut from Peter Jackson's film trilogy - which was likely a good choice. Typically, changes from author J.R.R. Tolkien's works are criticized by long-time fans, and the Lord of the Rings films are no exception. However, some changes made so much sense with the plot that it's easy to forget they were never part of the canon tale.
Much of Middle-earth had been entirely unaware of the race of Hobbits, so Théoden was deeply curious about Merry and Pippin. As they talked and feasted over the subsequent days, Théoden learned all about the Shire and Merry's adventures, and the hobbit loved hearing the stories of the king's life. Very quickly, they developed a close bond that equated to that of a father of son - something that's hard to imagine of their Lord of the Rings movie counterparts.
