Simon Burstall’s new photography book looks back on the carefree ’90s fashion of the Sydney rave scene.
. These photos had been sitting in Burstall’s parents’ attic for decades, untouched, and it wasn’t until the summer of 2016, when his parents were clearing out that house to sell it, that Burstall started to scan them. “That’s when the light bulb went on, but I didn’t know how hard it was going to be, and what I would go through emotionally to figure it out,” Burstall describes.
“I didn’t know focus, depth of field, anything—just shoot, shoot, shoot it. My friends at the time were behind me. They knew this was something special.”Burstall’s photos intentionally don’t always reflect the hedonism that you might expect of the era. “The only time I pulled the camera out was in the morning. I made a real point of it—I didn’t want to flash, and I didn’t want to expose the situation,” he says of his early approach to documentary captures.
