Small kindnesses go a long way right about now.

The coronavirus outbreak has rattled our daily lives, and things seem to change minute by minute. But there’s one constant: we have to eat. How do we cook among the chaos? What recipes do we lean on? How can we use cooking to stay calm? That’s what we’re exploring in this series,For many years, I worked at a summer camp that capped each week’s session with a campfire. There were long-haired counselors playing guitars . There were repeat-after-me songs and kids catching marshmallows on fire.

The best part of the ritual, though, took place among the staff. The rule was that you didn’t make your own s’more, that reward for getting through the week. It was better if it was a gift, if someone carefully toasted that marshmallow for you, the way they knew you liked it. And then you, in turn, made one for someone else.

I haven’t had a s’more in awhile, but I’ve been thinking of the ritual while working at home this past week. As a certifiedwho struggles to sleep during times of stress, I need to schedule my java-drinking so I don’t end up overly caffeinated too late in the day. 10 a.m. is really the cutoff for the last cup, and 10 a.m. is usually when I’m deep in a flow state on whatever I’m working on. I often forget. Headaches ensue.

My husband is good at making coffee. But I think the cups he’s brought me these last few days tastes so great at least partially because a coffee prepared by someone else—someone who is thinking about you at that moment, whether they’re your partner or your roommate—just tastes better. When there’s no controlling what’s going on, this small act of care makes me feel lucky for now.
