Thousands of players won smaller prizes ranging from $4 to $28. More than 395,000 players won smaller prizes by matching just the Powerball to matching three numbers and more than 100,000 of these players multiplied their prizes using the Power Play.
The odds of winning a prize in the Powerball lottery are 1 in 24.9, no matter the size of the jackpot or the number of tickets sold. However, while the odds of matching just the Powerball and winning $4 are 1 in 38.32, the odds of winning the jackpot by matching five numbers and the Powerball are one in 1 in 292,201,338.
The odds of winning a prize also vary by the number of the Power Play. When the Power Play is X2, the odds of winning are 1 in 1.79, but when the Power Play is X10, the odds of winning are 1 in 43. The Power Play is randomly selected just before the drawing and could be X2, X3, X4, X5, or X10. To play with the Power Play, purchase a ticket for $2 and add the Power Play option for an additional $1 per play. Players must choose five numbers for the white balls and one number for the red Power ball.
Make sure to only purchase Powerball tickets from an official, licensed retailer. The Powerball lottery is played across 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and some lottery jurisdictions sell tickets online. The deadline for ticket sales vary by jurisdiction but typically end between an hour or two before the drawing.
