The worst team gets the best young player, the next worst gets the next best, and so on. But there’s a consistent problem for the AFL... it’s not happening. 7AFL 7NEWS

But it hasn’t detered the clubs who are now adept at the wheeling and dealing to scrape together said points during a live draft. The standout talent of that draft was considered to be Nick Daicos. In fact, the AFL’s draft guru Callum Twomey had Daicos as his No.1 player all year and was emphatic that was the case even when South Australian Jason Horne-Francis showed exciting glimpses in the SANFL.

But this romance is completely “conditional” and, while fans are asked to buy in without question, there’s no tugging on the heart strings from clubs when they decided to cut the chord on a “son” who no longer fits their needs., the children of former captain, Gavin. The Western Bulldogs also gave up on Mitch Wallis, the son of their club great, Stephen. And Essendon sacked Tom Hird, the son of Brownlow medallist and Bomber royalty, James.

The AFL quickly changed that rule and now if a player from a Next Gen Academy is called in the first 40 picks of the draft - up from the first 20 last year - the club cannot match the bid. They simply have to suck it up.
