Sex Pistols 1978 San Antonio concert getting a punk rock anniversary bash
Lower on the decibel scale, but no less entertaining, is a large-scale photo exhibition of rare and never-before-seen photographs from the Randy’s Rodeo show and a screening of filmmaker Jim Mendiola’s “Pretty Vacant.”
Mendiola wasn’t at Randy’s. Just a kid at Central Catholic High School, he was too young to see the Sex Pistols in SA. Under the influence of Chicano filmmaker Luis Valdez’s 1969 film short, “I Am Joaquin,” the impressionable Mendiola played with myth in his grainy 16mm collage. For example, his protagonist was a woman. That was somewhat novel at the time. And the story wasn’t set in LA. It takes place 15 years after the concert in San Antonio.
He started writing the script in the early ’90s. “Pretty Vacant” took almost four years to finish. The black-and-white film was completed in 1996.
