Lovecraftian horror game The Sinking City undermines its spooky setting and world-building by tossing in too many RPG systems and side-quests, writes winnersusedrugs

is one of the year’s most intriguing, if imperfect, games. Based on the lore of H.P. Lovecraft and set in a dreary, flooded

town, it is the perfect thing to play if you value a rich environment and a vivid atmosphere. It’s equal parts’s Far Harbor, an investigative procedural that stands out for the disturbing macabre of its source material. But behind its delicious dive into Cthulu mythos, its uniqueness is diluted by some of the game design conventions it indulges.

Its mission structure also seems to be heavily influenced by Bethesda RPGs, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you overlook the often-jarring transitions from action to dialogue. But the missions themselves similarly seem modeled after some of the game’s better put together peers, and as such, it falls into a pattern that it both acknowledges but fails to challenge.
