It’s a show about people at their most interesting—fully formed, yes, but not at all settled.
.) To be fair, the show—adapted from Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s best-selling 2019 novel—centers mostly on a newly divorced hepatologist in his 40s having the worst summer of his life. It doesn’t exactly scream “fun.”is consistently a highlight of my week. The show isn’t so much about the unrelenting catastrophe of middle age as it is about growing up and figuring out how the hell we all got here.
But there’s also something compelling in the chaos. We’re swept up in the adrenaline of discovering that Toby’s wife, Rachel , actually had an affair, and the exhilaration of staying up until dawn with Seth, Toby’s banker playboy friend, played by Adam Brody .may, in fact, be the women in Toby’s life. When he visits his old friend Libby , an ex–magazine writer now marooned in the New Jersey suburbs with her husband and two kids, everything looks great.
We soon see Libby retrace her steps through her old Manhattan stomping grounds, and midway through her memory montage, her vision settles on theFleishman in trouble: Rachel, a lost soul in gray sweatpants. In episode seven—the most powerful and emotionally challenging yet—we fall through the looking glass with Rachel, understanding how an accumulation of trauma led to a sleepless, beef lo mein–fueled psychotic break.; this is not a light show—but it is a good show.
