Local senior care and homelessness advocates in San Diego County call for an easier path to the county's In-Home Supportive Care for unhoused care recipients.
Advocates for the homeless point to an especially crucial need for unsheltered individuals grappling with aging or disabilities: accessing caregivers. Data shows that older adults are one of the fastest-growing demographics among San Diego County's expanding homeless population. Last year's homeless count found that there were 1,500 unsheltered people age 55 or older, accounting for 29 percent of the region's homeless population.
In some cases, those who are unhoused will get turned away from shelters or brought to emergency rooms if they cannot attend to their own activities of daily living. 'They won't take you because they don't have staff that can assist somebody with showering or toileting or dressing in a shelter environment,' said Downey, who is also a board member for the Regional Task Force on Homelessness, the county's Continuum of Care program designated by the U.S.
