'Single-parent families don’t have something ‘missing’, we are just a different shape'
Shappi KhorsandiIn those first few months of my son’s life, I wept when I realised there were some mums who did this on their own. I could not have imagined this upside-down world of night feeds andSadly, by the time my son was two, our bubble had burst and his father and I split up. Never mind the. Never mind lawyers who feed off the misery of heartbroken souls and drag them through bank-balance-draining agony. The hardest reality to accept was that I was now a lone parent.
Again, those same family members and friends said, ‘Be thankful that he wants to be involved.’ And yes, I was to be thankful my ex-husband wanted to continue seeing our son, instead of faking his own death and moving to Honolulu. The dynamic between my son and me intensified – when we became ‘us two’ we bonded more intensely. We had to rebuild ourselves, he and I, we had to rebuild our family – and he frequently astounds me with his understanding and compassion.with my daughter a few years later. I knew from the start her father wouldn’t be in our lives and I would be doing this alone.
