The action sports star turned professor tackles existential questions in 'This Beauty'
Nick Riggle is having a very bad week. In fact, he goes so far to say that the last few weeks have been “the hardest of my life.”
“I always want to make something that’s readable, but that isn’t so straightforward. To make people think,” says Riggle. “But lately, I’ve wanted to write something more lyrical and evocative. Something that’s readable, but also strikes affinities and evokes emotion.” While the book is not a direct follow-up to “On Being Awesome,” it does feel in the same vein, a nice bookend where Riggle wittily and tenderly breaks down what would otherwise be dense concepts. Within that, usual suspects such as Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche, as do more contemporary thinkers and writers, such as Mary Oliver, Elaine Scarry and even Taylor Swift. At the center of these dissections, and what the book attempts to answer, is what Riggle calls The Question.
Of course, this is a question we’ve all contemplated at one moment or another. But with equal parts humor and gravitas, and lovingly peppered with personal anecdotes from his own life, Riggle weaves a poignant, autological guide to better understand not only ourselves and our inner machinations, but one that serves to help us navigate existence at large.
Still, he says he would bury himself in books and compose music while traveling to competitions. In his early 20s, Riggle was accomplished enough in his sport to where he could have started multiple skating businesses or secured endorsements, but that his heart was somewhere else.
