With the COVID-19 pandemic and private enterprises creating a serious workforce shortage, it’s not uncommon for employees to work 14-hour shifts six days a week to keep the neighborhoods clean.

AUSTIN, Texas — Damien Bailey-Harris is a familiar friendly face in Central Texas. For almost a decade, he’s been operating waste disposal trucks for Austin Resource Recovery.Due to a significant worker shortage, it’s not uncommon for operators to work six days and 14-hour shifts to handle the daily workload.

“We’re currently dealing with a shortage as high as 63 drivers and currently around 53,” Snipes said. “In January of this year, we had over 2,000 absences in our reporting period. That is a huge number of people that are out.” Austin Resource Recovery says due to the COVID-19 pandemic and private businesses, their workforce is currently in need of between 50-60 daily vehicle operators.
