The James Beard awards are considered the Oscars of the culinary world.

Merriss, also executive chef at Kan-Kan Cinema & Brasserie in Indianapolis, is not new to the honor, having garnered semifinals nods each year from 2016 to 2020.Mohammad, who trained at the Culinary Institute of America and Le Cordon Bleu, is a newbie to the list. He cures his own meats and makes his own cheeses.

Mohammad and his wife, Rachel Firestone, opened the tiny 9th Street Bistro during the coronavirus pandemic, initially selling take-and-bake meals before opening for dine-in service in September 2021.
