Someone once reeled in a record-breaking 40-pound fish from the San Antonio River.

Shannon Tompkins / Houston Chronicle— but while it may be his personal best, it doesn't match the all-time record for the river.

That record belongs to Wayne Trammell Jr., who in January of 2020 caught a 4.4-pound largemouth bass using a Rapala lure.for every river and stream in Texas. Only anglers who go to an official weigh station to certify their catches are considered for record status. Anglers who catch and release are out of luck.

Matthew Sontag caught a blue catfish in 2020 weighing in at nearly 40 pounds using rod and reel and cut bait. That is at the upper limit of what they typically weigh in at,. Your best shot to catching one is during the winter months when they swim south from the Ohio, Missouri, and Mississippi river basins in search of warmer water.

On the lighter side is a half-pound green sunfish that Omar Calzada caught in 2017 out of the San Antonio River. It's the heaviest green sunfish ever landed out of the river, but theIt's not common for these records to be broken. The record set by Frank Haecker for biggest rainbow trout ever fished out of the San Antonio River has stood for more than 10,600 days. This record is older than the writer behind the article.
