The Woodlands has grown a lot since its roots were first laid down in 1974, and many of its first haunts — The Glass Menagerie, The Feed Store and Hyden's are now just a memory for many original residents.
A Chinese restaurant that originally opened in The Woodlands in 1982 has come full circle with a new family-owned venture that opened in 2021.over 40 years ago. Originally a chef in midtown New York, Chan quickly received the attention of critics at The Houston Post and Chronicle with his take on Hunan and Cantonese-style dishes.
Less than two years later, the original Chan family decided to come back out of retirement and open a new venture, Chef Chan’s The Original, which opened in the Indian Springs Village Center in 2021 and continues to serve up classics. The Kosh family introduced Italian-American restaurant Amerigo’s as one of the first fine dining restaurants in The Woodlands in 1989, and it’s still serving up creative takes on the classics.
Diners can eat indoors against a backdrop of paintings or on its airy patio while sipping through “one of the most extensive wine lists in Houston,” according to Amerigo’s site. Focusing on vintage American cabernets and Old World Italian reds, the restaurant’s wine list has earned the Wine Spectator Award of Excellend for eight consecutive years.
“I wanted something that my girls would grow up getting to come to and enjoy and have fun with,” Kristen, who has two young daughters, said.
