With a $40 million library set to open in Sydney's inner west next week, an expert warns that without strategic oversight, some areas are missing out.
By providing these services, which contribute to the social and economic infrastructure needed by modern communities, Dr Wyatt argues there needs to be recognition of the complex role that libraries play.
"They're not part of that key infrastructure funding that the state funds — things like hospitals, schools and public transport — even though we could argue we are seeing them perform this expanded role in communities," she said. "The key concern is that the library developments we're seeing are not going where they are most needed.
"[That's] because there isn't a strategic approach and it's being funded at an ad-hoc level, just by people who can find the right champion, or they can get the ear of the right person in government or they manage to get a deal [with private enterprise]." For Marrickville residents, however, their champion has come through, with library-goers set to enjoy a facility offering 85,000 books, study rooms, conference facilities, and a landscaped garden."It'll be just about the prettiest library in Sydney, so this is a really big deal for the Marrickville community and will become a hub for all of the people in the inner west."
