Check out this tool from students at the MIT Senseable City Lab. It’s called “Escape” and it shows you what the cheapest flights to different spots are on given dates. The idea is to help you narrow down your vacation choices based on price.
This is far from the only helpful tool if you’re looking for a flight deal. Earlier this month, Google Flights announced a wider release of a price insights tool that will show you if you’re getting a deal on your flight or not. Another option? Industry favorite Hopper. The app analyzes trillions of airfares and other data points to predict when you can most likely get a deal on a flight — and when it’s going to be more expensive.
It’s also a good idea to look at spots that are serviced by a low-cost carrier when searching for deals -- even if you want to fly on a legacy carrier. As Hopper’s chief data analyst Patrick Surry recently told MarketWatch, when a low-cost airline like Spirit or Frontier enters the market, that competition can push the average good deal down by 40%-50%, and push legacy carrier fares down by 20%.
