Indeed, this declaration molded the notion that the United States is an exceptional model for other nations, despite well-chronicled stains that have diminished the promise. In his greatest address, for example, escaped slave and orator Frederick Douglass decades later acknowledged the greatness of the country’s birth while also poignantly pointing out the hypocrisy of a celebration of freedom and independence while slavery still existed in the nation.
