The hike to the dramatic Elk Falls in Staunton State Park used to be 12 miles. But thanks to a new parking lot, it’s only eight miles.

The journey may be the destination for some, but the hike to one of the Front Range’s most scenic waterfalls has been shortened this year, making it more manageable for visitors who might have thought it too far to attempt in the past.

“That was the general concept of why we put in this parking lot,” said Zach Taylor, the park’s manager. “It’s still pretty rugged, and at eight miles it’s still a pretty strenuous trip. You still have to be cognizant of the elevation change, the gear and equipment you bring, even when trying to do eight miles all the way to the waterfall.”

The western side of the park, where the waterfall is located, has a rugged and remote backcountry feel even though it’s only a 30-minute drive up U.S. 285 from C470. “That eastern portion of Scout Line is pretty steep,” Taylor said. “There’s a little more rugged terrain, which is why Scout Line is hiker-only. I would not recommend on that. And, there are certain segments of Marmot Passage where it’s pretty tricky as well. The Staunton Ranch-Bugling Elk trail is much more user-friendly.”There’s a nice spot at the end of a four-mile hike to relax and admire Elk Falls from up close.
