Another thing to be afraid of: A new study suggests drinking piping hot tea can almost double your risk of esophageal cancer

Tea lovers probably have a lot of burning questions about the potential link between sipping their hot beverage and getting esophageal cancer.

In short, the lead study author Dr. Farhad Islami of the American Cancer Society recommends that you “wait until hot beverages cool down before drinking.” “It’s not the tea itself, but the temperature of the tea that’s in question. And there just isn’t enough research to say how hot is too hot,” said Dr. Horovitz. “You would need to look at 5,000 or 10,000 tea drinkers, take the temperature of their tea, and do an endoscopy [a nonsurgical procedure examining the digestive tract] on all of them to see what changes there are to the esophagus.

There’s evidence to suggest that combining steaming hot drinks with other carcinogens or risk factors is actually the greater recipe for disaster. A 2017 study of 500,000 adults in China over an average 9.5 years, for example, found that drinking “hot” or “burning hot” tea was linked with a two- to fivefold increase in esophageal cancer in people who also smoked and drank alcohol “excessively.
