'How do we break from the terrible darkness of gun violence in America?'
nightclub in Orlando in June 2016, I took stock of my life in terms of the barrels, triggers, bullets, shells, casings, and powder of guns. I could see the timeline of my past: growing up, going to high school, going to college, getting a job. But I was starting to envision a kind of B plot, forming on top of it like an exoskeleton.It started with the men who drove around Washington, D.C., in 2002, firing a Bushmaster XM-15 rifle, murdering 10 people.
Another kind of tipping point occurred three years ago, in Ferguson, Missouri, when a police officer murdered Michael Brown in the street, fresh from his own graduation. Awas born not out of the singularity of the event, but out of its similarity to countless other deaths, the killings of unarmed black men and women. We discovered that no one even kept track of these types of murders, so common are they in this country. And there have been many, many others since.
