Despite her injury, Bisceglia waited two days until the fishing derby was over to see a doctor. By that time, the left side of her face was paralyzed and she had a lot of swelling. “They took me in stat, but the IVs didn’t work and my arm swelled up like an elephant,” she told Huffington Post.
For an octopus that can’t swim away, “the next best thing they can do is bite,” Paparo says. Octopuses actually have a beak like a parrot that they use to crush through crab shells and are “a pretty aggressive predator,” he says. Not only that, they typically have some level of venom so they can paralyze their prey. “Octopuses are also known to secrete venomous saliva to weaken their victim after drilling. If this happened, this would possibly be very painful and would result in bleeding and swelling due to an inflammatory response to the saliva,” says Smith.
When it comes to man vs. nature, just know that most animals aren’t going to put up with being handled without a fight. “You don’t want to risk battling them,” Paparo says.
