Following the El Paso shooting, there are three things Walmart could do to help rein in gun violence that need not be at odds with its imperative to remain profitable, writes johnsfoley.
Walmart said on Aug. 5 that there had been no change in its policy on firearm sales after two mass shootings, one of which took place in one of the U.S. retailer’s stores.
The shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, on Aug. 3 left 22 dead and a further two dozen people injured. The following day, a gunman in Ohio killed nine people. Walmart stopped selling assault-style rifles in 2015 and raised the minimum age for gun purchases to 21 from 18 in 2018. Firearms maker Sturm, Ruger’s shares fell 19% on Aug. 1 after it reported revenue fell by one-quarter in the second quarter compared with the same period year earlier.
