Dad spent years on the run but was arrested when he returned to the UK for family funeral
A thug who left a Liverpool FC goalkeeper lying in a pool of blood claims he fled to Spain after being slashed as he came under threat over his attack on the footballer.
But Martyn Walsh, defending, told the same court this afternoon, Tuesday: "He found himself, because of the nature of the case, on the front pages of the ECHO newspaper. That effectively led, because of the victim's status, to threats being made against him and his family. "He knows he is going to be away from his wife and four children. There is no plan to return to Spain. There are serious concerns regarding his safety if he is sent to a prison in the Liverpool area. The threats he told me about were very real."
Sentencing, Judge Menary said: "It must have come to your attention what the outcome of the trial was and that you had been sentenced to imprisonment, and yet you remained in Spain. I have been told that the reason you went to Spain and failed to return was because you were fearful of threats from others who took a dim view of your offence.
"No doubt whatever life you had made for yourself in Spain has been interrupted if not ruined by your detention and imprisonment. All of that, I am afraid, is your responsibility." He was left bleeding heavily from his eye, causing him to fear for his sight and his sporting career. Mr Smith said from the witness box: "I remember seeing my brother outside on the floor, and there was a crowd around him.
