If you insist on lighting fireworks this New Year's Eve, here's how to stay out of the emergency room

Karen Warren/Staff photographerWhether you stick to snakes and sparklers, or, as the lovable drifter in “Joe Dirt” would say, the stuff that goes boom, firework safety is key to enjoying the New Year’s holiday at home and not in a hospital.

One of the most important reminders is to never try to pick up or re-ignite a “dud” firework, or one that failed to explode. That's a major cause of injury, says Davis. All trash from fireworks should be doused in water, too, and fireworks should never be placed in trash cans in enclosed spaces. If you do get injured, it’s important to know how to respond, Ifedi said. For eye injuries, do not touch the eye or flush it out with water. Ifedi recommends covering the eye with household material — like the bottom of a foam cup — before going to the emergency room.
