Mascis presents lyrics in his songs could lead one to believe he and his band were slackers not strivers, particularly considering the manic sounds of their contemporaries in the ‘80s underground and ‘90s alternative rock. But Dinosaur Jr.
has proven among the rarest of excavated bands from that era: One that made new music that compares quite well to its earliest work. Five new Dinosaur Jr. albums — including last year’s excellent “Sweep It Into Space,” have entered the world since the original trio reunited, which sets it apart from reunited contemporaries I won’t name here, who sullied the punchbowl of their discographies with 21st century albums.
