USD linebacker Jagger Pagano has two relatives, his dad and uncle, who coached in the National Football League for many seasons
Famous middle linebackers all, who by name alone sounded like they fit the rugged, stick-your-face-into-a-tackle position.
He’s a starter this season and ranks third on the team in tackles with 26. He recorded a team-high 10 stops in last Saturday’s 22-10 win at Drake. Some of his favorite Chargers were Philip Rivers, LaDainian Tomlinson, Sean Merriman and Shaun Phillips. But his favorite Charger of all was tight end Antonio Gates.In fact, while Pagano’s father played tight end in high school and college and coached the position in the NFL, Jagger’s first position was tight end.“My dad enjoyed me playing offense,” said Pagano. “But he was sure happy when I started playing defense.
As the starting middle linebacker, Pagano is essentially the quarterback on defense. From the sideline, defensive coordinator Bobby Jay signals the team’s alignments and coverages to Pagano, who relays them first to the defensive line then the secondary.
