The new World Heritage designation brings new attention and respect for the earthworks. It will also likely bring in an influx of visitors from around the world. Want to visit the sites before the rest of the world arrives? Here’s what you need to know.

I visited all three over two days, with an overnight in Chillicothe. It was a lot, but doable.

One more suggestion: Take a tour at one of the sites if possible. The earthworks can be subtle -- some might say underwhelming -- and it helps to have an expert tell you why they’re so significant. Yes, you can read material in the museums at each site, but nothing beats the enthusiasm of a live guide.

“The myth of moundbuilders was used to help justify Indian removal,” said Kennedy, who led a tour of several dozen visitors on a recent Friday. “These are not forts. These are ceremonial sites.” The park and museum are open Wednesday through Sunday, April through November; hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Daily guided tours, which focus on the park’s natural history, are offered at 2 p.m.; monthly archaeological tours are offered at 1 p.m. on the third Friday of the month.

The centerpiece of the park is Mound City Group, the site of nearly two dozen burial mounds first created 2,000 years ago a short distance from the Scioto River. Discovered alongside those remains were numerous treasures from far-reaching lands, including copper from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, mica from the Smoky Mountains and obsidian from Yellowstone – further proof that these earthworks were pilgrimage sites visited by many people traveling far distances.

Other sites within the national historical park include Seip Earthworks, Hopewell Mound Group, Hopeton Earthworks and High Bank Works .All Chillicothe-area National Park Service sites are free and open daylight hours. The visitors center is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Information:This artist's conception shows what the Newark Earthworks sites looked like 2,000 years ago.

Starting in 1911, however, the Octagon has been the site of a private golf club, thanks in part to a long-term lease negotiated by what is now the Ohio History Connection . In recent years, the History Connection has been trying to get out of that lease. Thethat the organization could buy back the lease; a jury trial in Licking County is set to get underway next month to decide the amount.
