Transport For London Sets Out Economic Wins From More Walking And Cycling In 29-Page PDF

Transport for London creates fat brochure on the overwhelming benefits of investing in walking and cycling schemes.

Transport for London has launched a PDF packed with infographics setting out the strong economic case for investing in more walking and cycling schemes. Over 29 infographic-rich pages the brochure brings to life data culled from academic reports and other studies, including the U.K.s Department for Transport which, in 2013, revealed that the benefit-to-cost ratios of cycling schemes were many times greater than road or rail schemes.

The PDF states that that improving walking and cycling conditions can boost retail trade by up to 30% and that devoting space to cycle parking delivers five times more retail spend per square metre than car parking spaces.Why is important to boost bicycling and walking? The brochure warns that congestion will soon cost the capital £9.5-billion annually.

The document also lists the many health benefits of more active travel, which is a boon to employers because studies have shown that 73% of people who commute by bike feel more productive when they arrive at work.
