US President Donald Trump has expressed openness to tech billionaire Elon Musk acquiring TikTok, the Chinese-owned video-sharing app facing a US ban due to national security concerns. Trump's stance comes as the company seeks to avoid a complete shutdown of its US operations.
US President Donald Trump expressed openness to Elon Musk , the owner of social media platform X, acquiring TikTok, the Chinese-owned video-sharing app facing a US ban. Trump stated, 'I would be if he wanted to buy it,' when asked about the possibility of Musk, the world's richest man, purchasing TikTok. This comes amid a US law mandating TikTok to divest from its Chinese parent company ByteDance or face a ban in the country.
Although Trump had previously ordered a pause on enforcing the law, which was set to take effect on Sunday, he also suggested a 50-50 partnership between the US and ByteDance to save TikTok's US operations. The ban stemmed from concerns about the Chinese government potentially using TikTok to spy on Americans or manipulate US public opinion through data collection and content control. Trump himself stated, 'No, but ... I think I'll get it right now' when asked if he had TikTok on his phone, despite the app being banned on US government devices. Apple and Google have also pulled TikTok from their app stores, preventing new downloads and updates for existing users. Companies violating the law, which remains in effect, face penalties of up to US$5,000 per user if the app is accessed. TikTok has denied reports suggesting Chinese officials were considering selling its US operations to Musk's X platform
