Yatta Kiazolu has testified before the House on behalf of thousands like her who will be eligible for deportation after the deferred enforced departure program ends this month, andreamcastillo reports.

Other plaintiffs include a nursing assistant in Minnesota who fled Liberia during the civil war after her family members were jailed, disappeared, shot and attacked; and a healthcare worker in Massachusetts who has lived in the U.S. for 20 years and has six children who have never visited their father’s home country.The children of Liberians face an unreasonable decision, lawyers say.

Advocates mobilized before Trump announced that he would terminate DED in March 2018, urging legislative and Liberian Embassy leaders to speak out. At that time, members of Congress issued a letter urging Trump to extend the program for at least another three years. This month, 50 members of Congress“We’ve seen a twofold strategy from this administration — one is escalating enforcement against undocumented immigrants,” said Amaha Kassa, executive director of African Communities Together.
