Trump's Tariffs Have Opposite Effect on Wages, Contributing to Economic Decline

President Donald Trump's tariffs have had a negative impact on the US economy, with prices of goods increasing and wages being suppressed. The levies were introduced to raise tax revenue, bring back manufacturing to the US, and achieve foreign policy goals, but they have had the opposite effect. The Congressional Budget Office projects 6 per cent deficits for the coming decade, and industrial production has expanded by only 0.13 per cent per month since the start of 2025.

The US economy has been impacted by President Donald Trump's tariffs, with prices of goods increasing by up to 16.1 per cent. The tariffs were introduced to raise tax revenue, bring back manufacturing to the US, and achieve foreign policy goals.

However, the levies have had the opposite effect on wages, suppressing earnings growth and contributing to a decline in President Trump's approval rating. The Congressional Budget Office projects 6 per cent deficits for the coming decade, and industrial production has expanded by only 0.13 per cent per month since the start of 2025.

The tariffs have also led to a decrease in foreign policy goals, with the Iran quagmire showing the US is scoreless as the rest of the world diversifies away from America. In addition to raising prices, companies have also reined in labour costs to cover the expense of tariffs, with unit labour costs at non-financial companies being flat in the year since Liberation Day.

The consumer price index has risen 3.81 per cent in April from a year earlier, exceeding the 3.4 per cent increase in the Employment Cost Index over the first three months of the year. This has led to a decline in consumer confidence, with just 16 per cent of Americans rating economic conditions as good or excellent.

The White House counters that the stock market at record highs is a positive sign, but this is largely due to companies' ability to pass the cost of tariffs through to customers as higher prices while paying for the rest by suppressing wages. Labour's share of gross domestic income has sunk to 51 per cent, the lowest in records going back to 1947, while profits' share climbed to 12.1 per cent, the highest since 1950
