REUTERS/Sarah SilbigerBEDMINSTER, New Jersery: US President Donald Trump on Saturday all but dismissed Russian President Vladimir Putin's call for a summit of world leaders to discuss Iran, saying he probably would not participate.
The United States has threatened to trigger a return of all UN sanctions on Iran using a provision in a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, known as snapback, even though Trump abandoned the accord in 2018. Diplomats have said the United States would face a tough, messy battle in any such move.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday the United States suffered a humiliating defeat at the Security Council. "It's a serious mistake, we regret that," US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Saturday of the Security Council vote in a news conference during a visit to Poland.
