Donald Trump denounced Puerto Rico's 'corrupt' leadership, writing on Twitter that 'a lot of bad things are happening' in the U.S. territory whose capital has been choked by protests in recent days
President Donald Trump on Thursday denounced Puerto Rico's "corrupt" leadership, writing on Twitter that "a lot of bad things are happening" in the U.S. territory whose capital has been choked by protests in recent days.
"The Governor is under siege, the Mayor of San Juan is a despicable and incompetent person who I wouldn’t trust under any circumstance, and the United States Congress foolishly gave 92 Billion Dollars for hurricane relief, much of which was squandered away or wasted, never to be seen again," Trump wrote.
Trump has long feuded with Puerto Rico's political leadership, a clash that dates back to the federal government's struggle to route supplies and services there in the wake of Hurricane Maria, which devastated the island and left much of it without power for weeks. San Juan, Puerto Rico, Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz has been especially critical of the president, earning Trump's lasting ire.
Puerto Rico's current governor, Ricardo Rosselló, is facing massive protests and calls to resign after hundreds of pages of offensive text messages and chats about his political rivals were leaked. The messages also mentioned manipulation of public opinion polls and included a joke about dead bodies filling a morgue before and after Hurricane Maria. Rosselló apologized for the texts but has thus far refused to resign despite demands from the scores protesters who have gathered outside La Fortaleza, the Puerto Rican governor's mansion.
