BREAKING: President Trump says he will impose a new 10% tariff on $300B of Chinese goods starting Sept. 1; Dow falls more than 450 points.
The U.S. will impose an additional 10 percent tariff on $300 billion in Chinese imports starting next month, President Donald Trump announced Thursday via tweet.
Trump's tweet comes in the wake of an 11:30 a.m. ET meeting at the White House, when Trump's trade team briefed the president on how the negotiations went, CNBC reported. The ensuing tweets suggest that Trump is frustrated with China's lack of follow-through. "More recently, China agreed to buy agricultural product from the U.S. in large quantities, but did not do so. Additionally, my friend President Xi said that he would stop the sale of Fentanyl to the United States – this never happened, and many Americans continue to die!" Trump tweeted.
The trade war between China and the U.S., the world's two largest economies, has rocked markets across the world for the last year and a half.
