A high-profile defamation battle between Western Australia Liberal Senator Linda Reynolds and her former staffer Brittany Higgins is underway in Perth.
Senator Reynolds is suing Ms Higgins over a series of social media posts shared by her former staffer in the years after she aired her rape allegation against ex-colleague Bruce Lehrmann .
Approaching the steps of the courthouse ahead of the trial, Senator Reynolds delivered a bold statement to reporters as she walked through the media scrum. In his opening statement to the court, Senator Reynolds' lawyer Martin Bennett claimed"every fairytale needs a villain" and his client was put in that role by Ms Higgins and Mr Sharaz.
Mr Bennett tendered photographs, social media posts and texts, including numerous photos, to illustrate Ms Higgins was enjoying herself.Mr Bennett also made an application seeking to amend Senator Reynolds' statement of claim to include a WhatsApp exchange between Ms Higgins, a journalist and Mr Sharaz.
Details surrounding Ms Higgins' $2.4 million Commonwealth payout are also set to be argued in the lengthy trial.
