Forward Breya Cunningham and point guard Jada Williams to play in 2022 FIBA World Cup
The 12-player USA Basketball Women’s U17 National Team includes two players from La Jolla Country Day School — forward Breya Cunningham and point guard Jada Williams.
LJCD is one of two schools in the country that has two players on the team, which will compete July 9-17 in the 2022 FIBA World Cup in Debrecen, Hungary. The roster was selected by the USA Basketball Development National Team Committee from 40 trials invitees in Colorado Springs, representing high school graduating classes of 2023 and 2024.The 6-foot-4 Cunningham was the San Diego Section Player of the Year, averaging 18.4 points and 11.4 rebounds.Williams, a first-team All-CIF selection, averaged 11.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.8 steals a game.
The Torreys finished the season 25-3, winning the San Diego Section Open Division title before losing by a point to Sierra Canyon and star player JuJu Watkins in the Southern California Open Division Regionals.The other Californian on the team is Morgan Cheli of San Jose Archbishop Mitty, whose coach, Sue Phillips, is the U17 head coach.The USA has won the FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup four of the last five times the event has been held, including the most recent championship in 2018.
