As health authorities warn of another wave of COVID-19 infections and urge residents to get their booster shots, the TGA has granted provisional determination for two new Pfizer vaccines to target Omicron.
The announcement on Wednesday came as state and territory health authorities warn of another wave of the COVID-19 infections and urged residents to receive their booster shots.The TGA said Pfizer was granted the provisional determinations for a monovalent COVID-19 vaccine and a bivalent COVID-19 vaccine .
Pfizer developed the Comirnaty Omicron vaccine to target the spike protein of the Omicron BA.1 variant of concern and the Comirnaty Bivalent vaccine to target a mixture of mRNAs for the original and Omicron BA.1 coronavirus strains, a TGA statement read. "I'd encourage people who haven't had their booster shots to go out there if they're eligible and do it as a matter of urgency."
Determination is the formal process which allows the TGA to decide whether a medicine is eligible for registration via two pathways.
