Flight delays are expected after at least five major airlines across the U.S. experienced issues with a flight-planning program

Southwest Airlines said it had successfully reset the faulty system and was planning to resume flights as soon as possible. Photo: Richard Drew/Associated Press By Robert Wall and Alison Sider Updated April 1, 2019 8:23 a.m. ET Airlines across the U.S. reported delays to departures early Monday, blaming a system fault.

In a brief statement, the Federal Aviation Administration said it was aware that several airlines were experiencing issues with a flight-planning program. American Airlines Group Inc. AAL 2.78% said the program was provided by AeroData Inc. and involves airplane weight and balance measuring. The FAA said “mainline operations and regional operations are impacted to varying degrees.”Delta Air Lines Inc. DAL 2.64% said some regional flights were impacted and United Continental Holdings Inc. UAL 1.

The widely used system helps airlines input data about the weight and balance of the plane into the flight computer. Southwest said it is the primary tool it uses to handle that information. American said its mainline operations used a different system. Southwest said flights had been delayed, and planes that were taxiing had to return to their gates. “Scattered flight delays are anticipated,” the airline said in a statement. Delta said it expected delays but no flight cancellations as a result of the outage.
