The UAW strike has begun against the Big Three automakers after a deadline to reach a deal expired. The United Auto Workers union is targeting walk-off strike to three factories.
The first strikes began just after midnight Friday at a Ford plant in Wayne, Mich., that produces Rangers and Broncos; a GM plant in Wentzville, Mo., that makes Chevy and GMC trucks and vans; and a Stellantis plant in Toledo that makes Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators.
In talks, the union is asking for a pay raise of about 36 percent. Ford and GM are both proposing a 20 percent raise over 4½ years. Stellantis was offering 17.5 percent raises over that same period. President Biden said in remarks: “They’ve been around-the-clock and the companies have made some significant offers. But I believe they should go further to ensure record corporate profits mean record contracts."
