East African regional forces regain control of Bunagana, a strategic town in eastern DRC that had been held by M23 rebels for more than nine months
M23 rose to prominence 10 years ago when its fighters seized Goma, DRC's largest city on the border with Rwanda. It derives its name from a March 23, 2009, peace deal, which it accuses the Congo government of not implementing.
Ugandan troops, which are part of the East African Community Regional Force in DRC, will now try to bring about M23's sequenced withdrawal from other areas under rebel control including Kiwanja and Mabenga.
