I spoke with Puebla natives living in New Jersey about their memories celebrating Cinco de Mayo in their homeland and their accounts were mixed: some lived too far from the historic area of town to attend theJersey City resident Sandra Tlatelpa told me when she was growing up in Puebla, Cinco de Mayo was one of her favorite local holidays. She said the streets came alive with large crowds and schoolchildren.
Leo Cervantes, a Highlands councilman and owner of Chilangos, a Mexican restaurant with three locations in New Jersey, told me he doesn’t even mind the “teaching moments” that have become part of his Cinco de Mayo celebrations.
