Ukraine is facing a future with more than 20,000 war amputees, many of whom are also suffering psychological trauma from their time in combat.
A video of Oksana Balandina, who lost both legs to a land mine, and Viktor Vasyliv dancing at their hospital wedding has lifted spirits in Ukraine.“Thank you for holding my hand,” Yurchuk told him.
Yurchuk has himself become the chief motivator for new arrivals from the front, pushing them as they heal from their wounds and teaching them as they learn to. That kind of connection will need to be replicated across Ukraine, formally and informally, for thousands of amputees.
