Zahid says Umno will not back any effort to make Anwar Ibrahim the next PM.
The Umno supreme council has decided to withdraw the party's support for the Perikatan Nasional led government, less than 12 hours after its vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob was appointed as the deputy prime minister.
In announcing the party's decision, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin should resign, and make way for a temporary prime minister to take over. This temporary prime minister he said, should only be focused on the people's welfare and should only be in power until "herd immunity" is achieved, afterwhich fresh elections should be held.
He said the party would also not support any effort to install PKR president Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister.
