The United Nations body responsible for assessing the latest climate change science on Wednesday elected Jim Skea of the United Kingdom as its new chair.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said in a statement that Skea was elected by 90 votes to 69 in a run-off with Thelma Krug of Brazil in a vote held at the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme in Nairobi.

He will hold office for the next five to seven years - a critical period both for the climate and the organisation, with temperatures expected to soon strike 1.5 Celsius of warming above pre-industrial levels. Created by two U.N. bodies in 1988, the IPCC produces objective reports considered the most authoritative source of scientific knowledge onKari De Pryck, a political scientist who has studied the organisation, told Reuters ahead of the vote that Skea had "listened well and showed he was open to compromise" in his work at IPCC on mitigating climate change.

Skea, 69, wrote on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that he was "humbled and deeply honoured" to have been elected to the position, adding that was of his priorities was "promoting the use of the best and most relevant science."
