Amid a fallout from her decision to cancel the Center for Racial Justice, Penn State President Neeli Bendapudi on Friday defended her commitment to racial diversity, equity and inclusion, even as hundreds of faculty question her commitment to those issues.

At the meeting of the Penn State Board of Directors, university president Neeli Bendapudi on Friday defended her commitment to racial diversity and equity amid the fallout of her decision to cancel plans for a Center for Racial Justice.

Bendapudi, who assumed the office of the president about six months ago, came under fire from hundreds of Penn State faculty, staff and students questioning her commitment to diversity after she decided to scrap the center. Bendapudi has said she believed it would be more effective to work to support and build on existing efforts rather than fund a new initiative.

More than 400 professors and lecturers recently signed a letter questioning Bendapudi’s commitment to racial justice. Included among the plans were recommendations made by a caucus of Black professors that addressed institutional racism, notably recruitment, retainment and promotion of Black faculty. “We don’t spend as much time talking about how we are doing right by students,” she said. “We do recruit but do they graduate? Do they get jobs? What happens to them when they come to us and come to be Penn Staters?”advance beyond the idea of simply having the numbers.
