Underdogs against Texas Longhorns, UTSA Roadrunners still have an edge

UTSA quarterback Frank Harris’ deep well of experience in Jeff Traylor’s offense is the kind of advantage a smaller program needs to exploit in order to compete with the money and top-flight recruits a school like Texas will always have.Under the new rules, a school like Texas can do even more of what UTSA cannot. The Longhorns’ money and exposure always meant something. Now, conceivably, it means even more.

His Longhorns outplayed the top-ranked team in the country for much of the afternoon last Saturday, and they clearly have the potential to be great. In fact, the future hasn’t looked this bright since around 1 p.m. last October 9 at the Cotton Bowl, where Sarkisian’s squad had bullied Oklahoma on the way to an 18-point halftime lead that made Texas look like it was on its way to the College Football Playoff.

It's that UTSA’s quarterback represents exactly how smaller programs can make the NIL-and-transfer-portal system work to their advantage. And it’s not as though UTSA has a bunch of athletic slouches. Sarkisian’s cornerbacks acquitted themselves well against Alabama, but might soon learn that the task of slowing Roadrunners senior wideouts Zakhari Franklin, Joshua Cephus and De’Corian Clark presents its own set of challenges. And just because UT’s young offensive line held up well against the Crimson Tide’s front seven doesn’t mean it can let up against UTSA nose tackle Brandon Brown.
