For those new to sports betting, it’s important to understand the basics before placing a wager. Betting the moneyline simply means betting on who will win the game.

The arcane term “moneyline” belies the simplicity of the concept. Betting the moneyline means betting on who will win the game.

In the screenshot below , the odds for the Week 15 Monday Night Football game between the LA Rams and Green Bay Packers are set out. The first column lists the point spread, the second column lists the moneyline , and the third column lists the game total. The concepts of point spreads and game totals are explained in the preceding links.

In sports like football, basketball, baseball, and hockey, the favorite for a game will always be listed with a negative moneyline. In the example above, the Packers are the favorites and listed at -340. The underdog will tend to be listed with a positive number , though in games that are expected to be extremely close, the moneyline may list both teams at negative numbers . The following screenshot shows an example of this from the NBA. Again, the moneyline is listed in the second column. Those positive and negative numbers represent two related concepts: a negative number indicates how much a bettor would have to wager in order to win $100.

Going back to the Rams/Packers example, a bettor would need to wager $340 on Green Bay in order to win $100.In the Bucks/Pelicans NBA example, bettors would need to wager $112 on Milwaukee to win $100, and $104 on New Orleans to win $100 .
