To help control a fever, dress your child in light clothing or remove layers.
Let them decide how many blankets or sheets they need. Allowing them to kick off or add layers will help them stay as comfortable as possible. A soak in a lukewarm bath can also help them feel cooler.
Most importantly, keep your child hydrated. Fluids help loosen congestion and prevent dehydration. Popsicles can be a win-win. You child will be happy and take in fluids slowly and steadily. Warm broth or soup can soothe sore throats. You can also try honey, which helps loosen mucus and alleviate pain — as long as your child is older than 1 year.
Run a humidifier to help with nasal congestion or try nasal irrigation with saline. If they’re too young to blow their nose, clean it with a nasal aspirator. Of course, if you have concerns for your child during their illness, remember: You know your child best. Reach out to their primary care provider when you’re worried. They want to partner with you to care for and comfort your child. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
