San Diego State center Nathan Mensah wasn’t among the 58 names called Thursday night at the NBA Draft, but it didn’t take long for his phone to ring.
Mensah offers a skill set that may translate better, not known for his low-post scoring but able to guard all five positions, block shots and run the floor with an agile, athletic body. The NBA is a ball-screen game, and the 6-foot-10 senior from Ghana showed an affinity to switch onto and corral some of the nation’s best guards.
Mensah becomes the second Aztecs player to sign with Charlotte in the last four years. Jalen McDaniels was drafted 52overall by the Hornets in 2019 and developed into a part-time starter before being traded to Philadelphia in February. That does include the first two college players selected: Alabama freshman Brandon Miller at No. 2 and Arkansas freshman Anthony Black at No. 6.
